Working with the land
’Gardening is a fantastically flexible medium through which an individual can accomplish many things’’
We are able to give students an opportunity to work outside in a quiet un-crowded environment, showing them how life can be developed from a tiny seed to a mature fruit, vegetable or flower. This provides a very natural opportunity for our students to create and grow things for themselves, giving freedom of choice with the full support of our dedicated staff.
Our garden offers space and the opportunity to allow our students to discover new interests and develop skills with a non-confrontational approach. Using physical and mental stimulation provides the students with a way of expelling energies that may otherwise be used in a negative, perhaps through aggressive behavior. The use of handling tools and objects of varying sizes can improve dexterity and muscle tone.
Some of our teaching may be less obvious such as helping to improve literacy through a simple task, such as labelling a plant or reading a seed packet. There are some who simply want to enjoy gardening but need practical advice and skills to get started or to progress. This approach can open doors to the future for those who demonstrate a stronger ability to learn and many students move on to work placements in the community.
